RESCHEDULED: Observatory Outing March 29th

posted Mar 28, 2015, 10:07 AM by Brice Center   [ updated Mar 29, 2015, 8:20 AM ]

This is a rescheduled event for March 29th.
The original event for March 28th was cancelled due to cloud cover.

Our optional outing to the Phillips Academy Observatory has been rescheduled to Sunday, March 28th.

What we'll do:

► We will use Phillips Academy's 16 inch optical telescope to look at the Sun, and Venus.

► We will receive a demonstration of the computer controller that automates the telescope.

Let's Look at the Sun and Venus:

The event on Mar 28th had to be cancelled due to cloud cover.  Our host said that our most interesting near-future opportunity for the observatory would actually be Sunday, March 29th, from 1:00-2:30pm.  Yes, daytime.

Our host said that they can use the computer controlled telescope to point right at Venus so we can see it even during the day.  Also, she said that they have two special telescopes that allow us to get spectacular close views of the sun (safely).  That's something you simply can't do with a regular telescope, and would be a unique experience.

Also, the weather looks like it's going to be very clear tomorrow, so it is pretty certain that we would not get cancelled again due to clouds.

This is an event that has very limited space, and therefore must be arranged on an RSVP basis through Evite.
